Arizona-Sonora Border Region

Unique opportunities and challenges

The states of Arizona and Sonora share a 361-mile portion of the U.S.-Mexico international border, have a long tradition of cross-border economic ties, and are experiencing increasing economic integration under NAFTA. The focus of this program area is on research that informs policy-makers, entrepreneurs and the public on matters related to Arizona’s economic relationships with Sonora and Mexico. Areas of special interest include trade, commodity flows, border infrastructure, tourism, border crossings, crossborder shopping, Mexican maquiladora sector, and transboundary industry clusters.
